Artist Barbara Shapiro to Exhibit at the Ridgefield Library
RIDGEFIELD, CT. Ridgefield Library is pleased to announce a new art show, "In Harmony: Abstraction and Figuration," Prints, Drawings and Paintings by Artist Barbara Shapiro. It will run from Sunday, June 4 through Sunday, July 9 in the Library’s Gallery during regular hours.
On Saturday, July 9, 2023 there will be an afternoon reception from 2-4:00 for Shapiro's bold and unique drawings, prints and paintings. Her figurative work will be shown in conjunction with her abstract pieces, showing the range of her art.
Ms. Shapiro works in a wide range of media including acrylic paint, India ink, watercolor pencils, oil pastels, soft pastels and pasted papers, on both her paintings and print. The accompanying image is an example from her "BOLD" series.
Using mixed media to create her figurative work, Ms. Shapiro renders faces with depth and dimension, leaving loose contour lines for the heads and shoulders. The emotions evoked in this work are ones of weariness and reflection. Of her multi-media figurative work, the artist states: "I appreciate and exploit the sensitivity of working from life by creating both delicate drawings and bold paintings. I do them on both paper and polyester film utilizing acrylic paint, charcoal pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, watercolor and pastel pencils.
For this artist there is harmony between abstraction and figuration. They both allow for a delicacy and boldness that stems from an interaction between line, color and balance.
Of her abstract work the artists states: "My multi-media abstract work is often more dramatic and experimental in both my paintings and prints. I am a printmaker who travels between monotypes, pronto plate lithographs, dry points and carborundum prints that are done on either paper or film. “
